Type 1 diabetes, also known as Insulin
Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM), is a condition or disease
brought on by the inability of the pancreatic cells to produce
any, or enough, insulin. Since insulin is needed to convert
food (in the form of glucose) into energy, the absence or lack
of insulin will have detrimental effects on the body. The
diabetic treatment for this condition is insulin medication.
That is, insulin is administered to the body. This is the only
way for a person diagnosed with type 1 diabetes to survive.
Insulin Treatment for Type 1 Diabetes:
Insulin may be classified into two: fast-acting insulin and
long-lasting insulin. As the name suggests, fast-acting insulin
works, well, fast. By fast we mean that it takes effect thirty
minutes after it is administered. It is advisable to use this
type of insulin in the morning right before breakfast. However,
its effect does not last very long. If the body goes through
the insulin quickly, another injection may be required right
before dinnertime.
The other type of insulin is long-lasting insulin. It may be
taken in conjunction with fast-acting insulin in the morning.
However, it will not take effect until two to three hours
later. If you take this in the morning with the fast-acting
insulin, you will probably no longer require another shot until
dinnertime because this type of insulin works longer.
Non Injection Treatment of Diabetes: A New Treatment
Option
For people who want to avoid the needle, there is an
alternative to insulin injections and that is the insulin pump.
The insulin pump is a machine that pumps insulin into the body
as needed. Before mealtimes, the diabetic only needs to press a
button to release an extra dose of fast-acting insulin that the
body will requires to process the food that will be consumed.
While the insulin pump may be inconvenient, as it needs to be
worn the whole day, some diabetics still consider it much
better to lug around a machine than to endure needle pricks
more than once a day.
While insulin treatment is the solution for persons with type 1
diabetes, a balanced diet is also important. Eating the right
food in the right amount will ensure that blood sugar level
will be stable. In turn, the body's insulin requirements will
also remain constant. Eating wisely, is a good natural diabetes
type 1 treatment that should be followed by all
diabetics.
